Basketball Tournament Glossary: All Terms Explained

Speak the Language of Basketball Tournaments

Between "round-robins," "cross-pools," "byes," and "point differential," basketball tournament vocabulary can seem intimidating. Yet these terms describe simple concepts once you understand them.

This glossary is your reference dictionary to understand — and explain — everything about organizing a basketball tournament.

Competition Formats

Pool (or group)
A set of teams that play against each other in a preliminary phase. A 4-team pool generates 6 matches (formula n×(n−1)÷2). The best teams from each pool qualify for the next stage.
Round-robin
Anglicism for "single pool." Each team plays every other team once. This is the most sportingly fair format. A 6-team round-robin pool = each team plays 5 matches, 15 matches total.
Cross-pool
Format where two pools play their internal matches THEN each team from one pool faces every team from the other pool. NX League specialty, ideal for 6 teams (2 pools of 3).
Bracket
Single-elimination table. An 8-slot bracket = quarters → semis → final (7 matches). A 16-slot bracket = round of 16 → quarters → semis → final (15 matches).
Mixed format
Combines a pool phase AND playoffs. This is the most popular format because it guarantees several matches per team while offering a spectacular finale.
Double elimination
A team must lose TWICE to be eliminated. Losers from the main bracket drop into a secondary bracket ("loser bracket"). Longer but fairer than a simple bracket.
Play-in
Preliminary round where lower-seeded teams face off to earn the last spots in the playoffs. Popularized by the NBA. With 10 teams, a play-in is often used to go from 10 to 8.

Standings and Tiebreakers

2-1-0 Scale
Universal basketball points system: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a loss, 0 points for a forfeit. Different from football (3-1-0).
Point differential (goal average)
Difference between points scored and points conceded. Used as a tiebreaker criterion when teams are tied on points. Specific point differential only counts matches between tied teams. Overall point differential counts all pool matches.
Head-to-head
First tiebreaker criterion: look at who won the match between the two tied teams. If Team A beat Team B, Team A is ranked ahead, period.
Mini-standings
When 3 or more teams are tied, create a standings table only considering their matches between themselves. Then apply the same criteria (head-to-head, point differential) within this mini-standings.

Planning and Logistics

Slot
Time interval allocated to a match, including playing time AND turnaround time (break, warm-up, team change). Example: 20-minute slot = 15 min play + 5 min break.
Rest time (or buffer)
Minimum delay between the end of a team's match and the start of its next match. Essential for player health. NX League automatically respects a configurable rest time.
Bye
Match exemption. In a 16-slot bracket with 12 teams, the 4 seeded teams receive a bye (they are directly qualified for the next round without playing).
Seeding
Pre-ranking of teams according to their estimated level. Seeded teams are distributed across different pools to balance the tournament. The #1 seed should not meet #2 before the final.
Forfeit (or walkover / WO)
A team does not show up for its match. Score recorded: 20-0 for the opponent. The forfeiting team receives 0 standings points.

Playoffs and Brackets

Playoffs
Generic term for the final stages of a tournament, after the pool phase. Synonym for "elimination phases."
Quarter-finals
Round pitting 8 teams against each other (4 matches). Winners advance to the semi-finals.
Semi-finals
Round pitting 4 teams against each other (2 matches). Winners advance to the final, losers play the 3rd place match.
Final
The last match of the tournament. The winner is champion.
Third-place match (or bronze medal match)
Match between the semi-final losers to determine the tournament's 3rd place.
Consolation bracket
Parallel bracket for teams eliminated early, allowing them to play classification matches. Very useful in youth tournaments to guarantee a minimum number of matches for every team.

Frequently asked questions

What is a round-robin in basketball?
A round-robin is a pool where each team plays every other team once. It is the most sportingly fair format. Example: a 6-team round-robin pool = 15 matches (formula 6×5÷2), each team plays 5 matches.
What is the difference between a bracket and a pool?
A bracket is a single-elimination table: you lose, you're out. A pool is a group where all teams play each other: you can lose a match and still qualify. Pools are fairer, brackets are more spectacular.
What is a bye in a tournament?
A bye is a first-round exemption. In a tournament where the number of teams isn't a power of 2 (4, 8, 16, 32), some teams — usually the highest-seeded — are directly qualified for the next round without playing.
