10-Team Tournament Bracket: 4 Formats, Schedule, and Duration
Why 10 Teams Is a Pivotal Format
The 10-team tournament is a pivotal format in amateur basketball. Neither too small (like 6 or 8), nor too large (like 12 or 16), it imposes strategic choices: a single pool would be far too long (45 matches!), single elimination too frustrating for first-round losers.
This guide presents all viable formats for a 10-team tournament, with the exact number of matches, estimated duration, and a concrete schedule example. Whether you're organizing a U13 tournament on Saturday or an inter-club event on Sunday, you'll know exactly which bracket to choose.

Format 1: Two Pools of 5 (2×5) — the Best Format for 10 Teams
The 2 pools of 5 format is, by far, the most recommended format for 10 teams. It offers the best compromise between number of matches, sporting fairness, and tournament duration.
2×5 Bracket Structure
| Pool A | Pool B |
|---|---|
| Team A1 | Team B1 |
| Team A2 | Team B2 |
| Team A3 | Team B3 |
| Team A4 | Team B4 |
| Team A5 | Team B5 |
Match Calculation
- Each 5-team pool: 5 × 4 ÷ 2 = 10 matches per pool
- Total pool phase: 20 matches
- Cross semi-finals (1st A vs 2nd B, 1st B vs 2nd A): 2 matches
- Final: 1 match
- Third-place match: 1 match
- Grand total: 24 matches
Advantages of the 2×5 Format
- ✅ Each team plays at least 4 matches (pool phase)
- ✅ The top 4 teams play 6 matches (4 pool + semi + final)
- ✅ Fair format: round-robin pools eliminate luck of the draw
- ✅ Manageable duration: ~5h on 2 courts, ideal for a single day
- ✅ Guaranteed suspense with cross semi-finals and a final
Variant: Top 4 per Pool in Quarter-Finals
If you want more teams to participate in the finals, qualify the top 4 from each pool (8 teams total) for quarter-finals. This adds 4 playoff matches. Total: 20 + 4 (quarters) + 2 (semis) + 1 (final) + 1 (3rd place) = 28 matches. Duration increases to about 6h. Every team is then guaranteed at least one playoff match, which is ideal for youth tournaments or friendly events.
Format 2: Single Pool of 10 (Round-Robin)
The single pool format (or round-robin) involves each team playing every other team. It's the most fair format but also the longest.
Match Calculation
10 × 9 ÷ 2 = 45 matches
Each team plays 9 matches — as many as a regular season in some leagues!
Estimated Duration
- With 2 courts and 20-minute slots (match + turnaround): 45 × 20 ÷ 2 = 450 minutes = 7h30
- With a lunch break: 8h30 to 9h — an entire day, without interruption
Advantages and Disadvantages
| ✅ Advantages | ❌ Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| Perfect fairness: everyone plays everyone | 45 matches, excessive duration for a single day |
| No need for finals: the winner is the top-ranked team | Late matches may be meaningless if the gap is wide |
| Ideal for a league (several weeks) | Very heavy to manage for volunteer organizers |
| 9 guaranteed matches per team | Impossible to fit into a single day without 3+ courts |
Our take: the single pool is excellent for a multi-week league (one match per week), but it is not recommended for a single-day tournament. For a one-off event, prefer the 2×5 or mixed format. If you absolutely want round-robin for 10 teams, plan for at least 3 courts (45 × 20 ÷ 3 = 300 min = 5h) and avoid finals.
Format 3: Single Elimination with Play-In
Single elimination is the fastest format, but it requires an adjustment for 10 teams since a classic bracket works with powers of 2 (4, 8, 16, 32...). With 10 teams, you add a play-in round.
Bracket Structure with Play-In
Seeds 1 to 6 are directly qualified for the quarter-finals. Seeds 7 to 10 play a play-in round to earn the last two spots in the quarters.
| Round | Matches | Teams Involved |
|---|---|---|
| Play-in | 2 matches | 7th vs 10th, 8th vs 9th |
| Quarter-finals | 4 matches | 1-6 + 2 play-in winners |
| Semi-finals | 2 matches | 4 quarter-final winners |
| Final | 1 match | 2 semi-final winners |
| Third-place match | 1 match | Semi-final losers |
Total: 10 matches (without classification matches for quarter-final losers).
Advantages and Disadvantages
- ✅ Very fast: ~1h40 on 2 courts (10 slots × 20 min ÷ 2 courts = 100 min)
- ✅ Maximum suspense: every match is do-or-die
- ❌ The 4 play-in teams play only 1 match if they lose
- ❌ The 2 play-in losers only play one match — frustrating for a youth tournament
- ❌ Very sensitive to seeding: a bad seeding ranking skews everything
💡 Tip: add a classification bracket (5th-8th place and 9th-10th) so every team plays at least 2 matches. This adds 4 matches (2 for 5th-8th place + 1 for 9th-10th), bringing the total to 14 matches and the duration to about 2h20.
Format 4: Recommended Mixed Format (Pools + Playoffs)
The mixed format is the formula NX League recommends for 10 teams. It combines a pool phase (2×5) followed by playoffs, guaranteeing both a minimum number of matches per team and a spectacular finale.
Full Progression
- Pool phase: 2 pools of 5 in round-robin. Each team plays 4 matches. Total: 20 matches.
- Standings: teams are ranked according to the 2-1-0 scale (win 2 pts, loss 1 pt, forfeit 0 pts). In case of a tie, see our complete tiebreaker rules guide.
- Cross semi-finals: 1st Pool A vs 2nd Pool B, 1st Pool B vs 2nd Pool A. 2 matches.
- Final: semi-final winners. 1 match.
- Third-place match: semi-final losers for 3rd place. 1 match.
Matches Per Team in the Mixed Format
| Situation | Matches Played |
|---|---|
| Teams ranked 5th in pool (eliminated after pools) | 4 matches |
| Teams ranked 3rd-4th in pool (eliminated after pools) | 4 matches |
| Teams ranked 2nd in pool (semis + third-place match) | 6 matches |
| Teams ranked 1st in pool (semis + final) | 6 matches |
Grand total: 24 matches. Each team plays at least 4 matches, which is very satisfying for a single-day tournament.
Variant with 5th-10th Classification
To ensure all teams play a playoff match, add classification matches for teams not qualified for the semis:
- 5th-8th place classification matches: 2 matches (3rd A vs 4th B, 3rd B vs 4th A)
- 9th-10th place classification match: 1 match (5th A vs 5th B)
- 5th and 7th place finals: 2 matches
This brings the total to 29 matches and guarantees at least 5 matches per team. Ideal for a youth tournament where every child should play as much as possible. Duration increases to about 6h-6h30 on 2 courts.
Comparison Table of the 4 Formats for 10 Teams
Here is a complete summary to help you choose the format suited to your tournament:
| Criterion | 2 pools of 5 (2×5) | Single Pool | Single Elimination | Mixed (recommended) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total Matches | 24 | 45 | 10 | 24 |
| Min matches/team | 4 | 9 | 1 | 4 |
| Max matches/team | 6 | 9 | 4 | 6 |
| Est. duration (2 courts) | ~5h | ~7h30 | ~1h40 | ~5h |
| Sporting fairness | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Suspense | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Organization complexity | Low | Medium | Very low | Low |
| Ideal for | 1-day tournament, youth or adult | Multi-week league | Short event, elite | ⭐ Club tournament, annual event |
Our recommendation: for 95% of 10-team single-day tournaments, the 2 pools of 5 + playoffs (mixed) format is the best choice. It combines a reasonable number of matches (24), a minimum of 4 matches per team, and rising suspense leading to the final.

Planning and Duration on 2 Courts
Here's how to schedule a 10-team tournament in 2×5 format on 2 courts with 20-minute slots (15 min play + 5 min turnaround). This complete schedule gives you a real vision of the on-the-day organization.
Pool Phase (20 matches)
With 2 courts, the 20 pool matches are spread across 10 slots. Each 5-team pool generates 10 matches. By assigning one pool per court, both pools run in parallel, which is very efficient.
| Slot | Time | Court 1 (Pool A) | Court 2 (Pool B) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 09:00 | A1 vs A5 | B1 vs B5 |
| 2 | 09:20 | A2 vs A4 | B2 vs B4 |
| 3 | 09:40 | A1 vs A4 | B1 vs B4 |
| 4 | 10:00 | A3 vs A5 | B3 vs B5 |
| 5 | 10:20 | A1 vs A3 | B1 vs B3 |
| 6 | 10:40 | A2 vs A5 | B2 vs B5 |
| 7 | 11:00 | A3 vs A4 | B3 vs B4 |
| 8 | 11:20 | A1 vs A2 | B1 vs B2 |
| 9 | 11:40 | A4 vs A5 | B4 vs B5 |
| 10 | 12:00 | A2 vs A3 | B2 vs B3 |
Pool duration: 3h20 (10 slots × 20 min). Pools end at 12:20.
Finals (4 matches)
| Slot | Time | Court 1 | Court 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | 12:30 | Break — standings announcement | |
| 12 | 12:45 | Semi 1: 1st A vs 2nd B | Semi 2: 1st B vs 2nd A |
| 13 | 13:10 | Third-place match | - |
| 14 | 13:35 | 🏆 FINAL | - |
Total duration: ~5h (09:00 - 14:00), final and awards ceremony included. This is the perfect format for a tournament day: start at 9 AM, finish at 2 PM, teams are free for the afternoon.
Estimate with Other Match Durations
- 12 min matches (15 min slot): 24 × 15 ÷ 2 = 180 min = 3h — ideal U9/U11
- 15 min matches (20 min slot): 24 × 20 ÷ 2 = 240 min = 4h — standard youth
- 20 min matches (25 min slot): 24 × 25 ÷ 2 = 300 min = 5h — adult/senior
- 2×10 min matches (30 min slot): 24 × 30 ÷ 2 = 360 min = 6h — long format
