Basketball Tournament Formats Explained
How to Choose Your Tournament Format
The choice of format depends on three factors: the number of teams, the time available, and the goal (competitive or friendly). Here is a complete guide to the formats supported by NX League.
Pool Format (Round-Robin)
Each team plays every other team in its pool. This is the fairest format because it guarantees a minimum number of matches for every team.
Ideal for: youth tournaments, events where every team should play at least 3–4 matches.
Automatic calculation: NX League handles standings (wins, points scored, point differential, head-to-head).
Single Elimination (Bracket)
Losing teams are eliminated. Fast and intense — perfect for large tournaments with limited time.
Ideal for: final phases, large events (16–32 teams), time-constrained tournaments.
Mixed Format (Pools + Playoffs)
A pool phase to qualify the best teams, then single elimination for the title. This is the most popular format for club tournaments.
Ideal for: 8–24 teams, when you want to guarantee several matches AND a spectacular final.
Cross-Pools 2×3
Two pools of 3 teams with crossover matches between pools. This unique format allows 6 teams to play a maximum number of varied matches.
Ideal for: small 6-team tournaments seeking maximum diversity.
3×3 Tournament (FIBA 3x3)
3x3 basketball has its own rules: 3 players, a single basket, 10-minute or 21-point matches. NX League integrates these specific rules.
Ideal for: urban tournaments, summer events, official 3x3 competitions.
