Why 4 Teams Is the Perfect Format to Start With
A 4-team tournament is the organizer's starter pack. With only 6 matches in a single pool, you can set up a complete tournament in under 2 hours — ideal for a Wednesday afternoon gym slot or a Saturday morning.
Don't be fooled by the small size: 4 teams is also the format used by the EuroLeague Final Four, the most prestigious tournament in European basketball. With the right format, a 4-team event can be as intense as a 16-team one.
Format 1: Single Pool (Round-Robin) — the Simplest
Each team plays the other three. With the formula n×(n−1)÷2: 4 × 3 ÷ 2 = 6 matches.
In round-robin, each team plays 3 matches minimum. No finals: the final standings directly determine the winner. This is the most fair and easiest to organize format.
Estimated duration: with 1 court and 20-minute slots: 6 × 20 = 2h. With 2 courts: just 1h.
Format 2: Semi-Finals + Final — the Most Spectacular
The format closest to the Final Four:
- Semi-final 1: Team 1 vs Team 4
- Semi-final 2: Team 2 vs Team 3
- Final: semi-final winners
- 3rd place match: losers (optional)
Total: 3 or 4 matches. Each team plays 1 or 2 matches. Fast, intense, and every match is do-or-die. Perfect for a corporate event or an end-of-season tournament where time is tight.
Format 3: Home-and-Away Matches — the Most Complete
Each team plays the others twice (once "home," once "away"). With 4 teams: 4 × 3 = 12 matches.
Each team plays 6 matches. This is the ideal format for a multi-week league or a full day of competition. With 2 courts and 20-minute slots, allow 2h for the 12 matches.
This format is particularly suited to clubs that want their teams to play as much as possible in a league atmosphere.
